Study Guides Why Study in Australia? Rankings, Work Rights and Graduate Outcomes
Seven Australian universities sit in the QS world top 100, degrees are taught entirely in English, and eligible graduates can stay and work on a Temporary Graduate visa, here is what studying in Australia actually involves.
Student Visa Working While You Study in Australia: What 48 Hours a Fortnight Really Means
The 48-hour work cap is not a weekly limit. Here is how a fortnight is actually counted, what changes during course breaks, which placement hours do not count, and what breaching the condition risks.
Student Visa Student Visa Subclass 500 Refusals: The Reasons That Come Up Most
Most subclass 500 refusals trace back to four things: the Genuine Student requirement, funds evidence, course-progression logic, or an incomplete CoE. Here's what each one actually means and how to fix it before you apply.
A senior secondary qualification recognised as equivalent to an Australian Year 12 certificate. Domestic school leavers are ranked by their ATAR through the state admissions centre (UAC in NSW/ACT, VTAC in Victoria, QTAC in Queensland, SATAC in SA/NT, TISC in WA); international applicants are assessed against the recognised equivalent of their own qualification and may enter through a foundation year, a diploma pathway or with credit from prior study. Postgraduate entry normally requires a relevant bachelor’s degree, with a weighted average mark or GPA threshold and, for some programmes, professional experience or a portfolio.
Language: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students accept a Letter of Offer, pay the first fee instalment and are issued a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), then apply for a Student visa (subclass 500) with the Department of Home Affairs. The application must satisfy the Genuine Student requirement, include Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the full stay and evidence the current financial capacity amount. Student visa holders may work up to 48 hours per fortnight while classes are in session and unrestricted hours during scheduled breaks; eligible graduates can apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to work in Australia afterwards.
