The Diploma of Building and Construction (Management) is a one-year qualification for people who want to run building projects, not just work on them. You study how a construction job gets priced, programmed, supervised and handed over. That means reading plans and specifications, estimating materials and labour, preparing tender documents, planning site works and sequencing trades, and keeping a project on time and inside budget. You also cover the contract side of the industry: how Australian building contracts are formed and administered, how variations and progress claims are handled, and what work health and safety law requires of a site supervisor. Quality, environmental controls and the supervision of subcontractors come up throughout, because that is what the job actually is.
This is an AQF diploma, which sits below a bachelor degree and above a certificate IV. It is delivered over one year, and like most Australian vocational qualifications it is built from units of competency rather than the semester-and-credit-point structure you would see in a degree. Each unit is assessed on whether you can do the task to industry standard, so expect assignments that look like real site paperwork: a cost estimate, a project schedule, a site safety plan, a tender submission. Providers usually timetable diplomas across two or three study periods a year, and many deliver a mix of classroom or online theory with practical tasks. Confirm the exact unit list, delivery mode and study periods with York Business Institute before you enrol.
Work-integrated learning matters in this field, and construction diplomas typically include some form of industry-based task or placement so you spend time on an actual site or in a builder's office. That is where the theory sticks. You might help measure a job for a quote, sit in on a site meeting, or track a subcontractor's progress against the programme. Skills you come out with include estimating, programming, contract administration, safety planning, and the day-to-day coordination of trades and suppliers. You also build the documentation habits that let a head contractor or certifier trust your paperwork.
Who this suits: people already working in construction who want to move into supervision, estimating or project coordination; trade-qualified carpenters, bricklayers or concreters looking at a leading hand or site manager role; and career changers with some building knowledge who want a fast, practical entry into the management side. It also works as a stepping stone if you later want to articulate into a degree. International students should note that a Student visa generally allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, subject to the requirements at the time. English proficiency must be evidenced for international applicants, with IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall the common coursework standard and TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 119384B. Check the official page for current fees, intakes and entry requirements.
Employers include residential and commercial builders, civil contractors, subcontracting trades, project management consultancies, government infrastructure agencies and property maintenance organisations. Some graduates use the diploma as a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in construction management.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.

Student Visa Student Visa Subclass 500 Refusals: The Reasons That Come Up Most
Most subclass 500 refusals trace back to four things: the Genuine Student requirement, funds evidence, course-progression logic, or an incomplete CoE. Here's what each one actually means and how to fix it before you apply.
