Western Sydney University's Bachelor of Science is a three-year degree built on the Australian standard of 24 units of study, usually eight per year across two semesters. You will take core science units in your first year, biology, chemistry, mathematics and communication, then choose a major such as biology, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, physics or zoology. Each unit carries credit points, and you need to pass the required number to graduate. The degree sits at Level 7 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, the same level as any other bachelor degree in the country.
Expect laboratory sessions, field trips and tutorials, not just lectures. Environmental science students work in the Greater Western Sydney region; chemistry and biology students spend time in teaching labs at Parramatta, Hawkesbury or Campbelltown. Many majors include a research project or capstone unit in third year where you design and run your own investigation under a supervisor. Some students add a professional placement unit and spend a semester in a lab, a government agency or an industry partner. That work-integrated learning is optional in most majors but common in applied science streams.
You learn to design experiments, handle data, write scientific reports and present findings. You also pick up lab safety, fieldwork methods and the statistical tools scientists use daily. Group projects teach you to work in a team and explain your work to people outside science. These are the skills employers ask for in research assistant, quality control and environmental monitoring roles.
This degree suits school leavers who liked science but want to keep options open before specialising. It also works for mature-age students changing careers, or anyone who needs a science qualification for further study. If you plan to become a research scientist, you would normally follow this with an honours year, a fourth year of full-time study with a research thesis. A master's degree takes one to two years after that, and a doctorate three or more. International students should check the English requirement (IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate standard, though some courses ask for more), and note that a Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may let you stay and work in Australia. Confirm all details, including tuition and major availability, on the official Western Sydney University page and the CRICOS register.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
