Associate Degree in Educational Studies (Secondary) (Exit Only)

This associate degree is an exit-only qualification. That means you don't apply for it directly, you enrol in a longer teaching degree at Western Sydney University, complete the first two years of study, and if you decide not to continue to the full bachelor's, you can leave with this associate degree instead. It's a recognised qualification in its own right, sitting at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree but above a diploma.

What you study

The coursework covers the foundations of secondary teaching: educational psychology, curriculum and instruction, literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, and professional practice units where you spend time in schools observing and teaching under supervision. Because it's an exit point from a teaching degree, the units are the same ones a bachelor of education student would complete in their first two years. You study full time over two years, usually across two semesters a year, with each unit carrying a set number of credit points. To finish, you need to pass all the required units, there's no separate capstone or thesis at this level.

Where it fits

An associate degree on its own doesn't make you a registered teacher in Australia. Teacher registration requires a completed bachelor degree or higher, plus the English and other requirements set by the state authority where you want to teach. What this qualification does give you is a formal tertiary credential and credit towards further study if you decide to return. Many universities, including Western Sydney, will consider your completed units for credit if you re-enrol in a bachelor's later. The professional experience you complete in schools also counts as real classroom time, which is useful if you later apply for support roles in education.

Who it suits

This suits students who started a secondary teaching degree, found the full four-year commitment wasn't right for them at the time, and want something to show for the study they've already done. It also suits people who need to step away for work, family or financial reasons and want a qualification rather than an incomplete degree. If you're an international student, you'll need to meet the university's English requirements, for teaching courses, that's typically IELTS 7.0–7.5 overall, higher than the standard 6.0–6.5 for most undergraduate programmes. The Student visa also has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream.
