Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management

The Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to run programmes and teams in Australian community organisations. You study how community services are funded, how to manage staff and volunteers, how to keep services compliant with Australian regulations, and how to plan and review programmes that actually help the people they are meant to help.

How the course is structured

Australian qualifications are built from units of study, each worth credit points. This advanced diploma is normally delivered over one year, often across two or three study periods rather than the two semesters a bachelor degree uses. You also learn to handle the legal and ethical side of community services, including duty of care, privacy and reporting obligations. Graduates come out able to supervise staff, write funding submissions, run meetings, manage client records and report to a board or funding body.

Who it suits

This course suits people already working in community services who want to move into a coordinator, team leader or manager role, and career changers with some relevant experience. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification in health or community administration without committing to a full degree. English proficiency is required for international applicants; the common standard is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a student visa normally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and after completing the course you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream.
