This is a two-year Master of Education at Victoria University, specialising in Curriculum & Instruction. It's for people who already work in education, teachers, school leaders, curriculum coordinators, TAFE and adult-education staff, and want to go deeper into how curriculum is designed, sequenced and assessed. You'll study how people learn, how to build units of work that actually hold together, how to assess fairly and reliably, and how to lead curriculum change inside a school or training organisation. Expect a lot of reading, writing and discussion. Much of the assessment is assignments and projects rather than exams, which suits people juggling study with a full-time job.
Australian master's degrees usually run one to two years full time, and this one is two. The year is split into semesters, and sometimes a summer or winter teaching period, so you can spread units out if you're working. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to pass enough of them to reach the total for the award. A typical coursework master's has a core spine, curriculum theory, research methods, assessment and pedagogy, plus electives you choose to match your setting, whether that's primary, secondary, vocational or adult education. Many programmes finish with a capstone unit, a research project or a minor thesis where you investigate a curriculum question from your own workplace. Some offer a research pathway if you're thinking about a doctorate later.
You learn to read research critically and use it to justify what you teach and how you teach it. You get better at writing curriculum documents, mapping outcomes across year levels, designing assessment tasks that actually measure what you intend, and analysing student data without fooling yourself. You also build the skills to lead, running professional learning, bringing colleagues along on a change, and reporting to school leadership or a board. If your capstone is a research project, you'll also practise collecting and analysing evidence, which is the part many teachers find hardest.
This suits practising educators who want to move into curriculum leadership, specialist teaching roles, or further study. It also fits people in education-adjacent work, museums, training providers, government, edtech, who need a proper grounding in curriculum and instruction. If you're an international student, note that English proficiency is required; IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework-postgraduate standard, though teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work ask for 7.0–7.5. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and Victoria University's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents, and the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may let you stay and work in Australia, check current rules with the Department of Home Affairs. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 117853E. Confirm structure, entry requirements and fees on the official Victoria University page before you apply.
