The Diploma of Community Services is a one-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. It sits at the diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree, and is built around the practical skills community service organisations actually need: case work, client assessment, referral, group work, advocacy and community development. You will study how to work with people in crisis, how to keep case notes and records, how to apply legal and ethical frameworks, and how to work safely with clients who may be dealing with family violence, mental health issues, homelessness, disability or settlement in a new country.
Australian diplomas are usually made up of a set number of units of study, each with a credit point value, delivered over one year of full-time study. Most colleges run two or three study periods across the year, so you might take four or five units at a time. The course blends classroom learning with practical assessment. Because community services is a hands-on field, your diploma will include a work placement, often called vocational placement, where you spend time in an agency under supervision. That placement is where you put case work and communication skills into practice with real clients, and it is a requirement for graduation.
You will learn to conduct client assessments, develop and review case plans, work within legal and ethical requirements, respond to critical incidents, and support people from diverse backgrounds. There is a strong focus on communication: interviewing, active listening, report writing, and working with other services. You will also look at how the Australian community services system fits together, government departments, non-government organisations, and the referral pathways between them. Group work, community education and advocacy are covered too, because many graduates end up running programmes rather than only one-on-one case work.
This diploma suits people who want to start working in the sector reasonably quickly, or who are already working in a support role and want a recognised qualification. It also works as a pathway: some students use it to enter a bachelor degree in social work or community services with credit for some units. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. English requirements for this field are usually higher than for many other diplomas because you will be communicating with clients in difficult situations. Confirm the exact entry requirements, tuition and start dates on the official CRICOS register and with Vigil International College directly.
These roles are found across Australia in the community services sector, which employs people in every state and territory. Many graduates start in direct support or case work and move into coordination, team leadership or specialist practice with experience.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
