The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run the show, a restaurant, a hotel department, a function centre, a pub kitchen. You learn how hospitality businesses actually work: rostering and labour costs, stock control, food safety, responsible service of alcohol, budgeting, marketing, and leading a team through a busy service. Assessment is mostly hands-on. You plan and cost menus, manage a shift, handle complaints, write operational reports. Some of it happens in a training kitchen or simulated service environment, and courses of this type usually include a work placement or industry-based hours so you spend real time on a commercial floor before you finish.
This is an AQF diploma, which sits between a certificate and a bachelor degree. It runs 1.5 years full time. Australian diplomas are built from units of competency rather than subjects, and each unit carries credit points. You will typically study across two or three semesters or trimesters a year, with a mix of core units, the ones everyone must do, and electives you choose around your interests, whether that is accommodation, events, gaming or food and beverage. There is no research thesis at this level. The final stage is usually a capstone-style project or a supervised work placement where you apply everything to a real venue or simulated operation.
You finish able to write a roster that meets the award, cost a dish, order stock without blowing the budget, brief a team before service, and deal with a customer who is not happy. You also pick up the compliance side the industry runs on: food safety plans, liquor licensing rules, workplace health and safety, and the paperwork that keeps a venue out of trouble. Communication matters as much as the technical skills. Hospitality is a people business, and the course pushes you to lead staff, manage conflict and keep service standards consistent when the room is full.
This suits people already working in hospitality who want to move into supervision or management, and school leavers who would rather learn by doing than sit through a three-year degree. It also works for career changers and for international students who want an Australian qualification in an industry that hires year-round. If you are an international student, note that a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, which is a genuine advantage in this field, many students pick up casual shifts in venues while they study. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances. Entry usually needs Year 12 or equivalent, and international applicants must show English proficiency, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the college's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official page for current entry requirements, unit lists, placement arrangements and fees.
Hiring industries include hotels and resorts, restaurants and cafés, pubs and clubs, event and function companies, catering firms, airlines and airports, cruise operators, and tourism businesses. The diploma also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business management, with credit for the units you have completed, if you decide to go further.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$22,900 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
