The Bachelor of Business at the University of Tasmania is a three-year degree built around how organisations actually run, accounting, economics, management, marketing, finance and business analytics. In first year you cover the core: accounting and finance fundamentals, micro and macroeconomics, business law, statistics and communication. After that you choose a major and build depth in it. Teaching happens across the Sandy Bay campus in Hobart and the Inveresk and Newnham campuses in Launceston, and many units are available online, which matters if you are balancing study with work or living outside the cities. The degree sits at Level 7 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, the same level as any three-year Australian bachelor degree.
UTAS runs a two-semester academic year with an optional summer semester. You complete units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to accumulate the total credit points set out in the course rules to graduate. A typical full-time load is four units per semester. The degree usually includes a capstone unit in your final year where you work through a real business problem, often for an external organisation. Some majors offer an internship or work-integrated learning unit, and the Tasmanian business community, accounting firms, state government, tourism operators, agribusiness and the salmon and forestry sectors, takes a steady stream of students on placement. If you do well, an additional honours year is available, which adds a research thesis and is the standard route into a PhD.
You finish with the skills employers ask for: reading a set of financial statements, building a budget, running a market analysis, writing a business case, working in a team on a deadline, and presenting to people who will push back. You also learn the software the industry uses, spreadsheets, accounting packages, data tools. Group work is heavy in this degree, which is deliberate. Most business graduates spend their careers in meetings, so learning to argue a position and then compromise is part of the training.
This suits school leavers who want a broad commercial degree rather than a narrow one, and it suits mature-age students changing careers or formalising experience they already have. If you are unsure whether you want to be an accountant or a marketer, the common first year lets you decide later. International students should check the English requirement for their specific course, IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall is the common standard for undergraduate business, though some courses ask higher. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents, and the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. A Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session. On graduation you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 002346B. Confirm entry requirements, majors and credit rules on the official UTAS course page before you apply.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
