The Associate Degree of Business is a two-year qualification built around international business. You study how companies trade across borders, how different legal and cultural systems shape deals, and how money moves between countries. Core units usually cover accounting, economics, marketing, business law and management, with international business units looking at exporting, global supply chains and cross-cultural negotiation. Assessment is a mix of exams, reports, group projects and presentations, much like a bachelor degree but compressed into two years.
An associate degree sits at level 6 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, one step below a bachelor degree. It is normally two years full time, delivered across semesters or trimesters. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to pass a required total to graduate. Some institutions build in a capstone unit in the final semester where you work through a business problem end to end. Work-integrated learning varies: some associate degrees include a placement or industry project, others do not, so check the course structure on the official page. If you want to keep going, credit from an associate degree often counts towards a bachelor degree, though how much depends on the receiving institution.
You learn to read a balance sheet, explain why a currency move changes an importer's margins, draft a simple contract clause, and put together a market entry brief for a product going into another country. Group work is common, which is deliberate: international business is done in teams, often across time zones. By the end you should be able to analyse a business situation, write it up clearly and defend your recommendation.
This suits school leavers who want a business qualification without committing to three or four years, and people already working who want formal credentials in international trade. It also works as a stepping stone: finish the associate degree, then articulate into a bachelor with credit. English requirements for international applicants are typically IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, separate from the institution's. If you hold a Student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm structure, credit points and entry requirements on the official page before you apply.
Hiring industries include freight forwarding and logistics, wholesale and retail trade, professional services, banking and finance, agribusiness exporters, and manufacturing firms with overseas supply chains. Many graduates use the qualification as credit towards a bachelor degree before moving into specialist roles.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$42,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
