The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run the show, a restaurant, a hotel department, an events team, a licensed club. You learn how the pieces fit together: rostering and staff supervision, food and beverage service, budgeting and financial reports, stock control, legal compliance, and the day-to-day problem solving that keeps a venue trading. Assessment is largely hands-on, so you spend time on service scenarios, team tasks and written planning rather than only sitting exams.
This is an AQF advanced diploma, which sits above a certificate IV and below a bachelor degree. It is delivered over 24 weeks, and the provider sets the study pattern, some run it as two terms, others in shorter blocks. You complete a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, and the exact unit list and credit values are on the official course page. There is no research thesis at this level; the final work is usually a practical project or a supervised work placement where you apply your skills in a real venue. Confirm the placement hours, unit sequence and any credit arrangements with Times College before you enrol.
By the end you should be able to write a roster that works, read a profit and loss statement, handle a difficult customer without escalating the situation, brief a kitchen and floor team before service, and keep records that satisfy health, safety and liquor rules. You also pick up the softer side: leading casual staff who may be younger than you, communicating across cultures, and making quick calls when something goes wrong mid-service.
It fits people already working in hospitality who want a formal qualification for a supervisor or duty manager role. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification in a field where jobs are plentiful and the training is hands-on. If your goal is a bachelor degree later, ask about credit transfer, some Australian universities recognise advanced diploma study for entry or credit into hospitality, business or tourism degrees. Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, subject to the Department of Home Affairs rules. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent, but check the official page for the exact requirement.
Hospitality is one of Australia's largest employing industries, with work in tourism, accommodation, food service, clubs, casinos and event management. Employers range from international hotel groups to family-run restaurants and national catering companies.
It typically takes 24 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
