The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification for people who want to run hospitality operations, not just work in them. You cover food and beverage management, front office and accommodation operations, rostering and payroll, budgeting and financial control, marketing, and the legal side of running a venue, liquor licensing, food safety, responsible service of alcohol, workplace health and safety. Later units move into revenue management, event coordination and leading a team through a busy service period.
Australian qualifications are built from units of study, each with a set credit point value. Most providers run two semesters or three trimesters a year, and you need to pass the set number of units to graduate. This advanced diploma sits above a Certificate IV and below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework. Many students use it as a pathway: finish the diploma, then apply for credit towards a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business, usually around one to one-and-a-half years of advanced standing.
Expect a practical course. Assessment is often based on real service periods, simulated front desk and restaurant tasks, and a work placement in a hotel, restaurant, events venue or resort. Some providers arrange placements; others ask you to find your own and sign it off. You finish with a portfolio of operational experience and the confidence to step into a supervisor or duty manager role.
This suits school leavers who want a hands-on start, career changers moving out of unrelated jobs, and hospitality staff already working who want formal recognition and a promotion path. International students study on a Student visa, can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while courses are in session, and may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) after graduating. English entry is usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, though check the exact requirement with the provider. Tuition is listed on the CRICOS register, confirm current fees, intake dates and unit structure on the official page.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$25,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
