The Bachelor of Health Science (Dance) at The Australian College of Physical Education is a three-year degree that sits at the intersection of dance practice and health science. You study how the body moves, how dancers train and recover, and how to keep performers healthy across a career. Core areas typically include anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, exercise prescription, motor control, dance technique and conditioning, injury prevention and management, and the health and wellbeing of performers. You also build the academic skills to read and apply research, which matters in a field where training methods change as evidence grows.
Australian bachelor degrees are normally three years full time and sit at Level 7 of the Australian Qualifications Framework. Study is usually organised into semesters or trimesters, with each unit of study carrying a set number of credit points. You need to pass the required number of credit points to graduate. Most students take a standard load each semester, though some institutions offer part-time or accelerated options. The course generally includes a capstone unit or final-year project where you bring together what you have learned, often through a research task, a practical project or a supervised placement. Work-integrated learning is common in health science degrees, and dance health is no exception: you may spend time in studios, clinics, gyms or community settings, working alongside teachers, therapists or health promotion teams. Confirm the exact unit list, placement requirements and credit point totals on the official course page.
Graduates leave with a working knowledge of functional anatomy and how it applies to dance technique. You learn to assess movement, spot injury risk early, and design conditioning programmes that support performance without overloading the body. You practise communicating health information to dancers, coaches and parents, and you get comfortable working in teams where the goal is keeping people moving safely. The degree also develops your ability to evaluate evidence, write clearly and manage projects, which are useful well beyond the studio.
This course suits people who have trained in dance and want to understand the science behind it. It also suits students interested in health, exercise or rehabilitation who want to work with performers rather than the general population. If you are deciding between a performance-focused degree and a health degree, this sits in the middle: you keep dancing while you learn how to look after dancers. International students should check the English language requirement for their intake, and note that the Student visa has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. While studying, most student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check the official page for current details.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
