The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to run teams, projects and day-to-day operations. You study how organisations work and how to get things done through other people: planning and managing business resources, leading and motivating a team, managing budgets and financial plans, building relationships with clients and stakeholders, and handling workplace problems before they get out of hand. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, so it is practical and job-focused rather than academic theory for its own sake.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each carrying credit points, and are usually delivered over two semesters or three trimesters across the year. You will spend most of your time in workshops, tutorials and group work, with assessment based on projects, presentations, reports and simulated workplace tasks rather than long written exams. Where the provider arranges it, a work placement or industry project lets you apply what you have learned in a real organisation and counts towards your units. Credit for previous study or relevant work experience can sometimes reduce the number of units you need to complete, though you should confirm this with the college.
By the end you should be able to read a budget, write an operational plan, give clear direction to a team, deal with a difficult customer or staff member, and explain your decisions to senior management. Those are the skills employers in retail, hospitality, logistics, health administration, community services and small business actually ask for in a supervisor or team leader.
This course suits several kinds of people: someone already working who wants formal recognition before going for a team leader or supervisor role; a school leaver who wants a shorter, hands-on qualification instead of a three-year bachelor degree; or an international student looking for a pathway into further study in business. If you later want a bachelor degree, many Australian institutions give credit for diploma study, so you may enter with some units already done. English requirements for international applicants are IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, and you should check the official course page for current fees, intake dates and unit details.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$10,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
