The Diploma of Remedial Massage at TAFE NSW trains you to assess and treat soft tissue problems using hands-on techniques. You'll study anatomy and physiology, learn how muscles, joints and nerves work together, and then learn how to find and treat the spots that are causing pain. Expect plenty of practical work: myofascial release, trigger point therapy, joint mobilisation, sports massage, and remedial exercise prescription. You'll also cover client assessment, treatment planning, infection control, and the legal and ethical side of running a clinic.
This is a 1.5-year diploma, so it runs over three or four study periods depending on how TAFE NSW structures the year. You'll complete units of study, each worth credit points, and build up the qualification as you go. There's a supervised clinic component where you treat real clients under the guidance of qualified massage therapists. That's where the theory clicks, you learn to take a case history, test range of motion, and adjust your treatment as you go. Assessment mixes practical exams, written tasks, and case studies, so you need to be comfortable working with your hands and explaining what you're doing.
Once you finish, you can register with an Australian professional association as a remedial massage therapist. That registration matters because it lets you work with private health funds, which means your clients can claim rebates. Many graduates work in private clinics, sports clubs, or alongside physiotherapists and chiropractors. Some go on to further study, like a bachelor degree in health science or clinical massage, and credit points from this diploma can count towards that. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while you study, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you graduate.
This course suits people who want a practical, client-facing career in health. You don't need a science background to start, but you do need to be comfortable touching people and talking about their health. It's also a good fit if you're already working in fitness, aged care, or beauty and want to add a clinical skill. Check the official CRICOS page and the TAFE NSW handbook for the exact unit list, clinic hours, and English requirements, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the usual standard for this level, but confirm on the official page.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$22,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
