The Diploma of Conservation and Ecosystem Management at TAFE NSW is a practical, field-based qualification for people who want to work on the ground in land management, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration. Over 1.5 years you study how Australian ecosystems function, how to survey and monitor native plants and animals, how to manage weeds and pest species, how to plan and carry out revegetation and rehabilitation works, and how to apply environmental legislation and work health and safety on site. You will spend a lot of time outdoors, in national parks, council reserves, catchment areas and TAFE's own field sites, learning to identify species, collect and record data, operate equipment and work safely in remote and rugged country.
This is an AQF diploma, which sits between a certificate IV and a bachelor degree. It is delivered through units of study, each with a set number of credit points, usually across semesters or trimesters. Assessment is competency-based: you demonstrate that you can perform tasks to industry standards, rather than sitting traditional exams. Expect a mix of classroom theory, laboratory work, field trips and supervised practical projects. TAFE NSW may offer full-time and part-time study modes, and some units can be completed through recognition of prior learning if you already work in the sector. Check the official TAFE NSW course page for the current unit list, timetables and any work placement requirements.
Graduates come away able to conduct flora and fauna surveys, use GPS and mapping tools, prepare site plans and monitoring reports, coordinate volunteers and small work teams, implement bush regeneration techniques, and interpret environmental plans and regulations. You also learn how to talk to landholders, community groups, Traditional Owners and government agencies, because conservation work in Australia is almost always a collaboration. The diploma includes work-integrated learning in the form of field placement or industry projects, which gives you real experience with employers such as local councils, national park agencies, Landcare groups, catchment management authorities and environmental consultancies.
This course suits school leavers who want a hands-on career rather than a purely academic degree, people already working in parks, gardening, farming or land care who want to formalise their skills, and career changers who care about the environment and want to get out from behind a desk. It is also a pathway: many students use the diploma to gain entry to a bachelor degree in environmental science, conservation biology or natural resource management, often with credit for the units they have completed. International students should note the English requirement published for this course, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework programs of this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and TAFE NSW's own English programs accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying in Australia, student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight once the course has started, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register; confirm all fees, intake dates and entry requirements directly with TAFE NSW.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$19,150 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
