The Diploma of Building Design is a one-year qualification for people who want to work in residential and commercial building design. You learn how to turn a client brief into drawings, documentation and approval-ready plans. Subjects cover architectural drafting, building materials and construction methods, structural principles, and the National Construction Code. You also study sustainable design, site analysis, and how to produce 2D and 3D drawings using industry software. Assessment is mostly practical: you prepare drawing sets, solve design problems, and build a portfolio you can show employers.
The diploma is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two or three study periods depending on the campus. It is made up of units of study, each with a set credit point value, and you need to pass all required units to graduate. There is no separate honours year at diploma level. If you want to go further, you can use the diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in building design or architecture, where you may receive credit for completed units. Some campuses offer part-time study, which stretches the course over a longer period.
TAFE NSW has strong ties to the building and construction industry. You learn from teachers who have worked in the field, and you may complete a work placement or industry project as part of your studies. This gives you experience with real projects and helps you build contacts before you finish. The course is recognised by the building design industry, and graduates can apply for registration with the relevant state authority to work as a building designer. Check the official page for details on placement requirements and recognition.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a practical, job-ready qualification without committing to a longer degree. It also suits people already working in construction, drafting or trades who want to move into design. If you are an international student, you can study on a Student visa and work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English requirements for international applicants are usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, or an equivalent test. Confirm all details, including tuition and intake dates, on the official TAFE NSW page or the CRICOS register.
These roles are found across Australia in architectural practices, building design firms, construction companies, local government and specialist consultancies. The diploma also provides a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in building design or architecture.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$26,325 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
