The Bachelor of 3D Art and Animation at TAFE NSW Higher Education is a three-year degree for people who want to build characters, environments and digital worlds for games, film, television and online media. You work across the whole production pipeline: concept art and visual development, 3D modelling, texturing and surfacing, rigging, animation, lighting and rendering, and compositing. The emphasis is on making things, not just reading about them. You spend studio time in software that studios actually use, and you finish with a showreel that demonstrates what you can do.
Like most Australian bachelor degrees, this one runs for three years full time and is made up of units of study, each carrying a set number of credit points. You need to pass a required total of credit points to graduate, and the sequence usually moves from foundational units in drawing, design and 3D software through to more specialised units and a final-year capstone project. TAFE NSW delivers its higher education degrees across semesters, with some units available in different study periods. Assessment is largely project-based, so you are graded on the work you produce rather than only on exams.
As an AQF bachelor degree, the qualification sits at level 7. That matters if you later want to add an honours year, which is typically one extra year of research, or move into a master's degree, which usually takes one to two years. The capstone in your final year is where you pull everything together into a substantial piece of work, often a short animated film, a game-ready asset set or a collaborative production, which becomes the centrepiece of your portfolio.
You learn to draw and design for 3D, model and sculpt in digital space, build materials and textures, rig characters and creatures, animate performance and action, light a scene, and composite the final image. Alongside the technical side, you develop production skills: working to a brief, taking feedback, managing your time across a project, and collaborating with other artists and technical staff. Those are the things employers ask about in interviews.
This degree suits school leavers with a portfolio and a serious interest in games, animation or visual effects. It also suits people who have done a diploma or certificate in design, media or IT and want to go further, and career changers who have been making art or 3D work on their own and want a structured qualification. TAFE NSW has strong industry connections and its teaching staff come from the production side of the industry, so the focus stays on what studios need.
International students should check the official TAFE NSW and CRICOS pages for current entry requirements, English proficiency standards, tuition and intake dates. A Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on the conditions at the time. Confirm all details with the institution before you apply.
Australian employers in these fields include game development studios, animation and visual effects companies, advertising and design agencies, broadcasters, and the growing screen production sector in New South Wales and across the country.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$75,120 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
