The Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run programmes and teams in the community services sector. You study how community organisations are funded, staffed and regulated in Australia, and how to keep services accountable to the people who use them. Typical units cover operational planning, budgeting and financial reporting, human resource management, work health and safety, risk, quality and compliance, and leading teams through change. You also look at the legal and ethical side of community work, duty of care, privacy, mandatory reporting, and the standards that apply to funded services.
This is a diploma-level qualification on the Australian Qualifications Framework, delivered over 1.5 years. Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points, and you normally study them across semesters or trimesters. Assessment is competency-based: you show you can do the task, not just describe it. That usually means written tasks plus practical work, such as preparing a budget, writing a funding submission, running a team meeting or responding to a complaint. Many programmes include a work placement in a community organisation, because the sector hires on demonstrated practice. Providers set their own timetable and placement arrangements, so confirm the exact unit list, credit points and placement hours with Sydney Metropolitan International College before you enrol.
You learn to write and manage a budget, report against funding agreements, recruit and roster staff, handle grievances, and keep records that stand up to audit. You practise planning a service, measuring whether it is working, and adjusting it when it is not. There is a strong emphasis on communication, dealing with clients in distress, working with volunteers, and reporting to a board or funding body. You also build the compliance skills that community organisations need to keep their registration and their funding.
This suits people already working in community services, team leaders, coordinators, case workers stepping up, who want formal recognition for management work they are already doing. It also suits career changers with some supervisory or administrative experience who want to move into the not-for-profit and community sector. If your goal is a bachelor's degree, this can be a pathway, and some institutions give credit for diploma study. English requirements for international applicants are usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the college's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check the official CRICOS entry and the college's page for current fees, intake dates and entry requirements.
Employers include not-for-profit organisations, charities, local councils, community health services, disability and aged care providers, youth services, and state and territory government departments that fund community programmes.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
