Master of Development Studies

The Master of Development Studies at the University of Sydney offers students a comprehensive understanding of development theory, practice and policy in both global and Australian contexts. This advanced programme equips students to critically analyse social, political and economic changes that shape development outcomes for communities, regions and nations. Structured over 1.5 years full-time, this master's program consists of coursework units and permits some elective flexibility, allowing students to tailor their studies to areas of interest such as the Asia-Pacific region, Indigenous development or humanitarian aid. As per Australian university standards, students complete a prescribed number of units of study to accumulate the required credit points for graduation. There is also the opportunity to undertake a capstone project or a research-based thesis, where students synthesize their learning through real-world or critical enquiry relevant to the development field.

Students gain practical skills in research methods, policy analysis, program evaluation, and cross-cultural communication, alongside the ability to engage with stakeholders from government, non-government, and civil society sectors.
