The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care at Swanston Institute is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with young children in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn from birth to five, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe, and how to work with families and other educators. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree but above a certificate III, and it is the qualification most often held by room leaders and lead educators in long day care and preschool settings.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered over two semesters, though some providers run three trimesters or a rolling intake. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. The units cover child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, legal and ethical requirements, and working inclusively with children who have additional needs. Because this is a practical job, the diploma includes a work placement component, a set number of hours in a registered early childhood service where you work alongside qualified educators, plan activities, and are assessed on the job. Your provider arranges or approves the placement. There is no research thesis at diploma level; the capstone is your final placement and the portfolio of observations and planning documents you build during it.
You learn to observe children and record what you see, to design learning experiences that match each child's stage, to manage a room and a daily routine, to respond to illness, injury and behavioural concerns, and to communicate with parents and colleagues. You also cover the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework, which set the rules and expectations for Australian services. By the end you should be able to step into a room and run it with supervision.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a fast route into paid work with children, career changers who want a qualification they can use within a year, and people already working in the sector who need a formal diploma to move into a lead educator or room leader role. If you plan to study in Australia on a student visa, note that you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances and the current rules. Check the CRICOS register and the Swanston Institute page for tuition, intake dates, English requirements and placement details before you apply.
These roles are found in long day care centres, community preschools, kindergartens, family day care schemes and school-aged care services. The Australian early childhood sector employs hundreds of thousands of people and continues to need qualified staff, particularly in areas outside the major cities.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$9,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
