The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work directly with young children in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn from birth to five, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to observe and document what children are doing, and how to keep them safe and well. Expect units on child development, curriculum and pedagogy, health and safety, nutrition, working with families and communities, and the legal and ethical side of the job. You also learn about inclusion, so you can support children with additional needs alongside their peers.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They are practical, competency-based qualifications rather than academic degrees. This one runs for one year full time and is usually delivered across semesters or trimesters, with a set number of units of study and credit points. Assessment is a mix of written tasks, projects, portfolios and direct observation of your work with children. Because the field is hands-on, the diploma includes a professional placement component. You go into a registered early childhood service and work under supervision, building up the hours you need to demonstrate you can do the job. Your placement is where the theory clicks, nappies, routines, group times, difficult conversations with parents, the lot.
By the end you can design and deliver a curriculum that follows the Early Years Learning Framework, track each child's progress against it, and adjust your teaching when a child needs something different. You learn to work within the National Quality Framework and the regulations that govern Australian early childhood services. You also pick up the everyday skills that keep a room running: supervising groups, managing behaviour in age-appropriate ways, responding to illness and injury, and communicating clearly with families and colleagues. Teamwork matters here. You will spend your career working closely with other educators, room leaders and centre directors.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a direct path into working with children, career changers who want a qualification they can use quickly, and people already working in the sector who need formal recognition to move into a room leader or lead educator role. It is also a stepping stone, many graduates go on to a bachelor degree in early childhood education, and some institutions give credit for the diploma, which shortens the degree. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is running, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish. English requirements for international applicants are published on the official page, and the Student visa has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. Always check the CRICOS register and the provider's page for current details on structure, placement hours and entry requirements.
These roles are found across Australia in long day care centres, community preschools, kindergartens, family day care schemes, and school holiday programmes. The sector is one of the country's largest employers of diploma-qualified staff, and demand for qualified educators remains steady in cities and regional areas alike.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$9,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
