This graduate diploma is for people who want to run hotels, resorts or hospitality groups, not just work in them. You study how global hotel chains operate, revenue management, guest experience, food and beverage, and the commercial side of running a property. The focus is leadership: rostering and leading teams, reading a profit and loss statement, and making decisions that keep a hotel profitable without wrecking the guest's stay.
It's a one-year course at graduate diploma level, which sits on the Australian Qualifications Framework between a bachelor degree and a master's. You'll complete units of study worth credit points across trimesters, and the structure is built so you can move into a master's later and carry credit across if you want to keep going. Assessment is a mix of exams, reports, group projects and practical work. Some units include a placement or industry project where you work with a real hotel or hospitality operator, which is how most people in this field get their first serious job offer.
What you actually gain is operational judgment. You learn to forecast demand, set room rates, manage supplier contracts, handle complaints that could turn into reviews, and lead a team through a busy season. You also get the language of the industry, RevPAR, GOP, OTA commissions, so you can sit in a management meeting and hold your own. Southern Cross University has a long history in tourism and hospitality teaching, and the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales region gives you access to one of the busiest hotel markets in the country.
This suits three kinds of people: someone with a bachelor degree in another field who wants to move into hotels, someone already working in hospitality who wants to step up to supervisor or duty manager, and international students who want an Australian qualification plus post-study work rights. As a student you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session, and on completion you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Entry usually needs a recognised bachelor degree or equivalent work experience, and international applicants need to meet English requirements, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework-postgraduate standard, with equivalents accepted. Check the official CRICOS listing and the university's page for the exact tuition, intake dates and entry rules.
Australian employers in this field include hotel chains and resort groups, pub and club operators, serviced apartment providers, event and conference venues, and tourism operators along the east coast and in major cities. The qualification also travels, global hotel brands hire managers with Australian hospitality training across Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$26,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
