The Bachelor of Human and Community Services is a three-year Australian bachelor degree for people who want to work with individuals, families and communities, in community development, case work, youth services, disability support, aged care coordination and similar roles. You study how people move through systems: how a family ends up in housing stress, what a young person needs after leaving care, how a community organisation runs a programme and reports on it, and how policy shapes what frontline workers can actually do.
Like most Australian bachelor degrees, it runs over three years of full-time study, usually split into two semesters a year (some institutions use trimesters). You build the degree from units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need a set total to graduate. Expect core units in human development, sociology, social policy, community work, counselling and communication skills, case management, ethics and legal frameworks, and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You then choose electives or a major, youth work, disability, aged care, family services, mental health, depending on what the institution offers. Most degrees of this kind finish with a capstone unit where you pull your learning together on a real project, and many include a professional placement or work-integrated learning component, because this field hires on demonstrated practice, not just theory. Placement hours and any pre-placement checks are set by the institution, so confirm them on the official page.
What you actually learn is practical. How to conduct an intake interview. How to write case notes that hold up. How to refer someone to the right service and follow up. How to run a group. How to work within funding agreements and report to a board or a government department. How to recognise when a client is at risk and what the law requires you to do. You also learn the boundary between support work and clinical work, this degree does not make you a registered health practitioner, and if you want to become a social worker you need an accredited social work degree, which is a different qualification with different placement requirements and a higher English standard.
Who it suits: school leavers who want a people-facing career, mature-age students returning to study, and people already working in community services, disability or aged care who want to formalise their experience. Australian community organisations, local councils, state government departments and NGOs all hire from this pool. As an international student, you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, check current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for this level, though teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work sit higher at 7.0–7.5. Confirm the exact English requirement, tuition, intake dates and placement details on the official CRICOS listing and the institution's own page.
Hiring industries in Australia include the not-for-profit and charity sector, state and local government community services, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider market, aged care providers, youth and family services, housing and homelessness services, and community health organisations. Some roles require a police check, a Working with Children Check or a NDIS Worker Screening Check.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$93,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
