The Bachelor of Physiotherapy at Southern Cross University is a four-year professional degree that prepares you to work as a physiotherapist. It's a hands-on course from the start. You'll study anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, then move into assessment and treatment of movement problems across the lifespan. Expect to learn how to examine a patient, work out what's going wrong, and design a treatment plan. You'll cover musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory and sports physiotherapy, plus rehabilitation and chronic pain management. The degree includes clinical placements in hospitals, private practices, community health and sports settings, so you graduate having already treated real patients under supervision.
Australian bachelor degrees are normally three years full-time, but physiotherapy is a four-year degree because of the clinical hours required for registration. You'll study in semesters, typically eight units a year, with each unit worth a set number of credit points. The first two years build your foundation in biomedical and behavioural sciences. Later years focus on clinical practice, and you'll complete a capstone or research project in your final year. Work-integrated learning is central: you'll do supervised clinical placements across the degree, often in blocks, and these count toward your registration requirements.
You'll finish with the skills to assess and treat patients independently, communicate with other health professionals, and work within an evidence-based framework. You'll also learn about professional ethics, patient safety and the Australian healthcare system. The course is designed to meet the accreditation standards for physiotherapy in Australia, so graduates can apply for registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia through AHPRA. That registration is what lets you practise as a physiotherapist in Australia.
This degree suits people who want a practical health career working directly with patients. You'll need to be comfortable with science subjects and enjoy problem-solving. It's a good fit if you want to work in hospitals, private practice, sports teams, aged care or community health. International students should check the English language requirements carefully. The published standard for this course is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, but registration as a physiotherapist in Australia may require a higher score, so confirm the details with the university and AHPRA. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight on a Student visa. After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. Check the official CRICOS register and the Southern Cross University page for current fees, intake dates and English requirements.
Graduates typically work across the Australian healthcare sector, including hospitals, private clinics, sports organisations, aged care providers and community health services. Registration with AHPRA is required to practise.
It typically takes 4 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$104,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
