The Bachelor of Engineering Systems (Honours) (Mechanical Engineering) at Southern Cross University is a four-year honours degree that trains you as a mechanical engineer with a systems mindset. You study the core of mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, materials, machine design, manufacturing and control, and learn to treat machines, products and plants as systems where mechanical, thermal, electrical and control elements interact. Honours means a research or design thesis in your final year, so you graduate with evidence you can plan and deliver an engineering investigation, not just pass exams.
Australian bachelor honours degrees are normally four years full time and sit at level 8 of the Australian Qualifications Framework, one step above a three-year bachelor degree. Study is organised into units of study, each worth credit points, usually delivered over semesters or trimesters. You accumulate credit points across core engineering units, a maths and physics base, engineering management and professional practice, and elective or major units. The final year typically includes a capstone or honours thesis unit where you work on a real problem, often with an industry partner or a research group, and report it to an academic panel.
Work-integrated learning is built into Australian engineering degrees because Engineers Australia expects it. You complete industry experience, commonly 12 weeks of approved engineering work, before you graduate, and you may take placements with manufacturers, mining and resources companies, councils, consultancies or energy businesses. Southern Cross has campuses in northern New South Wales and the Gold Coast, and its engineering teaching has links to regional industry and research in areas such as renewable energy, materials and sustainable manufacturing. The degree is structured to meet the Engineers Australia stage 1 competency standard for professional engineers, which is the accreditation pathway to becoming a chartered engineer. Confirm current accreditation status and placement requirements on the official course page.
You finish with the ability to design and analyse mechanical components and systems, use CAD and engineering software, run experiments and interpret data, manage projects and communicate engineering decisions to clients and communities. The degree suits school leavers with maths and physics, and also mature students moving from trades, technical roles or other engineering fields who want a professional qualification. International students should check the English requirement for their intake, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the usual undergraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during term. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream lets eligible graduates stay and work in Australia. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 112801B; check the official page for fees, intakes and unit details.
It typically takes 4 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$104,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
