The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run group activities, advocate for people dealing with housing, income, family or health issues, and work safely within the legal and ethical rules that govern community services. Expect units on case management, counselling and communication skills, community development, working with cultural diversity, child protection and family support, mental health, and the legal and organisational frameworks you'll work inside. Assessment is practical: role plays, case studies, simulated client interviews, written reports and supervised work placements, not just exams.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each carrying credit points. A full-time load is usually spread across two years, with semesters or trimesters depending on the provider's calendar. You need to complete all core and elective units and accumulate the required credit points to graduate. Because this is a vocational qualification, a substantial part of your time is spent in supervised work placement in a community services organisation, a neighbourhood centre, family support service, homelessness service, youth service or similar, where you practise under a qualified supervisor. Some providers also include a capstone-style project where you plan and deliver a community initiative or a piece of applied research. Confirm the exact unit list, placement hours and delivery mode on the official course page.
You graduate able to conduct client assessments, develop and review support plans, manage a caseload, de-escalate conflict, keep accurate case notes, work with interpreters and cultural brokers, refer people to the right services, and apply privacy, duty-of-care and mandatory reporting obligations. You also learn how to look after yourself in a field with high emotional demand, and how to work in a team alongside social workers, nurses, teachers and housing officers.
This diploma suits people already working in care or support roles who want a formal qualification, career changers who want to get into community services without committing to a full degree, and school leavers who prefer hands-on learning. It also gives you a pathway: many graduates use it as credit towards a bachelor's degree in social work or community services. International students should check the English requirement carefully, social work and community services sit in the higher band, typically IELTS Academic 7.0–7.5 overall, because you'll be communicating with vulnerable people in complex situations. While studying in Australia on a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, which is useful for getting experience in the sector, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs and confirm all course details, including tuition, on the official CRICOS page.
Typical employers include not-for-profit community organisations, local councils, state government departments, family and domestic violence services, homelessness and housing services, youth services, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, and disability and aged care providers. The diploma also provides credit pathways into bachelor's degrees in social work or community services at Australian universities.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$26,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
