The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You'll learn how to plan and run a play-based curriculum that matches each child's stage of development, how to observe and document what children are learning, and how to keep them safe, healthy and included. The subject area is curriculum and instruction, so a lot of the work sits in the practical craft of teaching: setting up indoor and outdoor environments, choosing experiences that stretch a child's language, thinking and social skills, and adjusting your approach for children with additional needs, different cultural backgrounds and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each carrying credit points, and this one is delivered over one year. That usually means two semesters or three study periods, depending on the timetable the college runs. Some units cover the theory, child development, legal and ethical requirements, workplace health and safety, first aid, and others are practical units where you demonstrate skills with real children. Because this is a licensed care qualification, you can expect a work placement as part of the course. That placement happens in a registered early childhood service, where a supervisor signs off on your competence against the national training package. You'll be assessed on what you actually do with children, not just on written assignments.
By the end, you should be able to design and deliver a curriculum that follows the Early Years Learning Framework, record children's progress accurately, work within the National Quality Standard and the regulations that govern early childhood services, and communicate with families and colleagues in a professional way. You'll also learn how to respond to incidents, manage behaviour positively, and work as part of a team in a room or centre. These are the skills employers check for when they hire, and they're the same skills the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority expects of anyone counted in the educator-to-child ratio.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a direct path into early childhood work, career changers who want a qualification they can use quickly, and people already working in the sector who need a formal diploma to move into a room leader or educational leader role. It also gives you a route into further study, many graduates go on to a bachelor degree in early childhood education, and some institutions give credit for the diploma, which shortens the degree. If you're an international student, you'll need to meet the college's English requirement, and you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is running. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available if you meet the Department of Home Affairs criteria. Tuition is listed on the CRICOS register, and you should confirm fees, intake dates, placement arrangements and the exact English evidence the college accepts on the official course page before you apply.
Employers include private and community long day care providers, local government preschools, not-for-profit children's services, school-based early learning centres, and family day care schemes. The qualification is recognised nationally, so you can work in any state or territory, and it meets the minimum requirement for educators counted in the staffing ratios set by the National Quality Framework.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
