The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You'll spend the year learning how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe and healthy, and how to work with families from all kinds of backgrounds. The subject area is curriculum and instruction, so a lot of your time goes into the practical craft of observing children, noticing what they're ready to learn next, and building experiences that actually stretch them.
Australian diplomas sit at the middle of the AQF, above a certificate III and below a bachelor degree. A one-year diploma like this is usually delivered over two semesters, sometimes three trimesters, as a set of units of study each worth credit points. You'll cover child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, legal and ethical requirements, and working inclusively with children who need extra support. Because early childhood is a hands-on field, the diploma includes work-integrated learning: supervised professional placement in a registered early childhood service, where you work alongside qualified educators and get signed off on the practical skills the qualification requires. You can't finish the diploma without completing that placement.
What you actually gain is a set of skills employers in the sector ask for every day. You'll learn to document children's learning, write observations and learning stories, set up indoor and outdoor environments, manage routines like meals and rest, respond to behaviour in ways that respect the child, and follow the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework. You'll also practise talking with parents and carers, keeping accurate records, and working as part of a team in a room with a mandated educator-to-child ratio. Communication, judgement and calm under pressure matter as much as theory.
This course suits school leavers who want to start working with children without committing to a three-year degree, career changers who've decided early childhood is where they want to be, and people already working in the sector who need the diploma to move into a lead educator or room leader role. International students should check the English requirement carefully: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework at this level, though teaching and care fields sometimes ask for more. The Student visa also has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs, separate from the course requirement. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 115166M. Confirm entry requirements, placement arrangements and fees on the official page before you apply.
These roles are found across Australia in privately run and community-managed early learning centres, local council preschools, not-for-profit providers and school-based kindergartens. The sector is one of the country's largest employers, and demand for qualified educators is steady because ratios and qualification rules require diploma-level staff in every service. Many graduates stay in the room and move up to educational leader or centre director roles over time, or use the diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in early childhood education.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
