The Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a two-year qualification for people who want to work on the design and documentation side of civil projects, roads, drainage, subdivisions, retaining structures and the like. You learn to turn an engineer's concept into drawings, specifications and calculations that a construction team can actually build from. Expect plenty of work in CAD and civil design software, plus the maths and materials knowledge that sits behind it: surveying, soil and rock behaviour, concrete and steel design basics, stormwater and road geometry. Assessment is mostly practical, drawing sets, design tasks and project work rather than exams alone.
Australian qualifications are built from units of study, each carrying credit points, and delivered across semesters or trimesters. This advanced diploma sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree, and typically packs a lot of technical content into its two years. You complete core civil design units and then choose electives that lean towards either drafting and documentation or site-based design support. Many institutions include a work-integrated learning component, a placement with a civil contractor, consultancy or local council, because that is how the industry hires. Check the official course page for the current unit list, credit-point structure and whether placement is built in or optional.
Skills you come away with: producing detailed civil drawings to Australian standards, reading and interpreting engineering plans, doing design calculations for drainage, pavements and simple structures, using surveying equipment, estimating quantities and costs, and working safely on site under WHS rules. You also get practice at the parts of the job that are not technical, coordinating with engineers, builders and clients, and keeping documentation accurate when a design changes.
This suits school leavers who want a hands-on technical career without a full engineering degree, career changers from trades or drafting backgrounds, and international students looking for a practical qualification with a clear pathway into work or further study. If you later want to become a professional engineer, you would usually need to articulate into a bachelor degree, and some institutions give credit for the advanced diploma. English proficiency is required for international applicants, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, confirm the current figure and all entry requirements on the official page.
Typical employers are civil engineering consultancies, construction companies, local government, water authorities and mining services firms. The qualification can also count towards credit for a bachelor degree in civil engineering or construction management if you want to go further.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$35,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.

Most subclass 500 refusals trace back to four things: the Genuine Student requirement, funds evidence, course-progression logic, or an incomplete CoE. Here's what each one actually means and how to fix it before you apply.
