The Associate Degree of Animation at SAE University College is a two-year qualification for people who want to make moving images, character animation, motion graphics, visual effects and the craft that sits behind them. You study the fundamentals: drawing and design, 2D and 3D animation, storyboarding, modelling, texturing, rigging, lighting and compositing. The point is to build a reel that shows what you can do, not just what you know.
Australian associate degrees sit at Level 6 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, one step below a bachelor degree. This one runs over two years, usually split into semesters or trimesters, with each unit carrying a set number of credit points. You accumulate credit points as you pass units, and the degree is awarded once you meet the total. SAE delivers its programs in a studio-style environment, so much of your work is project-based rather than exam-based. Assessment typically comes from finished animation pieces, production files and written reflection. The final part of the degree is usually a capstone project where you take an animation from concept through to finished short film or showreel, often working in a small team the way a real studio does.
Work-integrated learning is built into the SAE model. You work on live briefs, collaborate with students from other disciplines such as audio and film, and build a portfolio that you can show employers or use to apply for further study. If you want to continue, you can often articulate into a bachelor degree with credit for the units you have already completed, confirm the exact pathway with SAE.
This degree suits school leavers who have a folio or a strong interest in animation, and mature-age students changing careers into games, film, television or advertising. You do not need to be a brilliant artist to start, but you do need to be willing to draw, animate and take feedback. English proficiency is required for international applicants, with IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall as the common undergraduate standard, or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight during the teaching period. After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia for a period, check current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 080178M. Check the official SAE page for exact unit lists, intake dates and entry requirements.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$55,920 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
