The Graduate Diploma of Sinology Studies is a two-year postgraduate qualification for people who want to understand China through its language, texts, history and thought. Sinology is the older, text-based tradition of Chinese studies, reading classical and modern sources closely, tracing how ideas moved across dynasties, and placing China in its regional and global settings. You will spend your time on Chinese language at postgraduate level, classical and modern Chinese literature, Chinese philosophy and religion, and the history of imperial and modern China. Assessment is mostly essays, translations, source analyses and seminar papers rather than exams, which suits students who like to read widely and argue a case in writing.
Like other Australian graduate diplomas, this course is built from units of study, each carrying a set number of credit points. You accumulate credit points across semesters or trimesters until you meet the award requirements. A graduate diploma usually sits between a bachelor degree and a master's on the Australian Qualifications Framework, and it is common for students to use one as a stepping stone, some institutions allow credit towards a master's if your results are strong enough, so ask the college how that works before you enrol. Depending on the college's structure, you may finish with a research project or a supervised thesis on a topic you choose, such as a translation project, a study of a particular thinker, or a piece of archival history. Because the course is delivered by Royal Brisbane International College and the Royal Brisbane Institute of Technology, check the official page for the exact unit list, the semester or trimester pattern, and whether a capstone or research component is included.
Work-integrated learning is less standard in humanities fields than in teaching or nursing, but Sinology graduates often build practical experience through translation work, cultural organisations, community language programmes or research assistantships. If the college offers a placement or internship unit, take it, Australian employers in trade, education and cultural exchange value evidence that you can apply language and cultural knowledge in a real setting. The skills you gain are transferable: advanced Chinese reading and writing, source criticism, cross-cultural analysis, research and clear argument. Those are the skills that make you useful in diplomacy, trade, media and education, not just in academia.
This course suits three kinds of people. First, graduates in arts, languages or Asian studies who want to go deeper into Chinese texts and history. Second, professionals already working with China, in business, government, education or community services, who need serious cultural and linguistic grounding rather than a short course. Third, people considering a research degree later, for whom a graduate diploma is a way to test the water and build a track record. International students should note the English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework-postgraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the college's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight during term, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is available to eligible graduates. Confirm all details, including tuition, on the official CRICOS page and with the college directly.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$42,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
