About this program

The Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a two-year qualification for people who want to work on the design and documentation side of civil projects, roads, drainage, subdivisions, retaining structures, water and sewer reticulation. You learn to turn an engineer's concept into drawings, specifications and quantities that a construction team can actually build from. That means plenty of time in CAD and civil design software, plus the maths and materials knowledge to know when a design does not add up.

Australian qualifications sit on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), and an advanced diploma is a practical, industry-focused qualification one step below a bachelor degree. It is usually delivered over four semesters, or trimesters at some providers, with each unit of study carrying a set number of credit points. You will typically complete around 15 to 20 units, covering areas such as civil drafting, structural detailing, soil and materials testing, road and drainage design, project costing and estimating, and work health and safety. Assessment is mostly competency-based, you demonstrate you can do the task to industry standard, not just pass an exam.

Expect a strong hands-on component. Many providers build in a work placement or industry project, where you work alongside civil designers, engineers or site supervisors on a live job. That placement is often the thing that gets you your first role, because employers in this field hire on demonstrated software skills and drawing quality. Teaching is in English, and international applicants need to meet the provider's English requirement, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, which is separate from the provider's entry requirement.

This course suits school leavers who want a practical path into civil infrastructure without committing to a full engineering degree, career changers coming from trades or drafting backgrounds, and international students who want an Australian qualification in a field with steady demand. It also works as a stepping stone, some graduates use it to gain credit towards a bachelor degree in civil engineering or construction management. International graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, and while studying, a Student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official course page for entry requirements, unit lists and intake dates before you apply.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
