The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run the show in hotels, restaurants, events and food service. You learn how to manage a venue, not just work in one: rostering and leading staff, controlling stock and costs, planning menus, handling food safety, and looking after guests so they come back. The course mixes classroom work with hands-on training in commercial kitchens, bars and simulated service areas, so you spend time on the floor as well as in the books.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one runs 1.5 years, usually split across semesters or trimesters, and is made up of units of study, each carrying credit points. Assessment is competency-based, meaning you have to demonstrate you can actually do the tasks, not just pass a written exam. Many diplomas include a work placement or industry-based project, and hospitality is a field where that practical component matters. You might find yourself doing a placement in a hotel, a licensed club, a catering company or a restaurant, applying what you have learned in a real workplace.
What you gain is a set of skills employers recognise straight away: supervising a team, managing budgets and stock, dealing with difficult customers, complying with liquor and food safety laws, and using hospitality booking and point-of-sale systems. You also build the softer skills that keep a venue running, communication, problem-solving and decision-making under pressure. Some students use the diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in hospitality or business, with credit for the units they have completed.
This course suits people who are already working in hospitality and want to move into a supervisory or management role, as well as school leavers who want a hands-on qualification rather than a three-year degree. It also works for career changers who like the idea of running a cafe, bar or events business. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while you study, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English requirements for international applicants are typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. Tuition and exact start dates are on the CRICOS register, check the official page for the current details.
These roles are found across Australia's tourism, accommodation, food service and events industries, from city hotels to regional pubs and wineries. Some graduates move into supplier-side jobs with food distributors, beverage companies or hospitality technology providers. The diploma also gives you a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in hospitality management or business, where you may receive credit for your completed units.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
