The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a curriculum that actually fits the group in front of you, and how to keep children safe, well and included. Expect units on child development, play-based learning, observation and assessment, health and safety, and working with families and communities. You also learn the legal and ethical side of the job, including the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework that shape every service in Australia.
As an Australian diploma, this course is made up of units of study, each with a set credit point value, and is usually delivered over two semesters or three trimesters across the year. Assessment is practical. You write observations, plan experiences, keep portfolios and reflect on your own practice. Most diplomas in this field include a work placement, and it is a substantial part of the course. You go into a registered early childhood service and work alongside educators, with a supervisor signing off on your hours and skills. Placement is where the theory lands. You will run group times, set up environments, respond to behaviour, talk with families and learn how a real room operates from opening to rest time.
By the end you should be able to design and implement a curriculum, document children's learning against the framework, support children with additional needs, and work within the regulations that govern early childhood services. You will also build the communication and teamwork skills the job demands, because you are never working alone in a room. The diploma sits at AQF level 5, which means it is practical and job-focused rather than academic. It is the standard qualification for room leader and educator roles in long day care, preschool and family day care.
This course suits people who like being with young children and want a qualification that gets them into the sector quickly. It suits career changers, school leavers and people already working in services who need the formal diploma to move up. It also suits anyone planning to go on to a bachelor degree later, since some universities offer credit for diploma study. English requirements are set by the provider, and international applicants should check the published standard on the official page. If you are coming to Australia on a student visa, you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish, depending on your circumstances. Confirm all details, including tuition, on the official CRICOS register and the provider's page.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$22,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
