The Advanced Diploma of Human Resource Management is a practical, job-focused qualification for people who want to work in HR or take the next step in their HR career. It covers the core functions of the profession: recruitment and onboarding, performance management, workplace relations, payroll and HR information systems, workforce planning, and the legal framework that sits behind employment in Australia. You also study how to lead teams, manage change, and support an organisation's people strategy.
An advanced diploma is a vocational qualification, usually delivered over 1.5 years of full-time study. Providers typically run it across two or three study periods a year, with each unit of study carrying a set number of credit points. Assessment is competency-based: you show you can do the task, not just describe it. That often means written tasks, case studies, role plays, projects and practical simulations based on real workplace scenarios. Many providers include a work placement or structured workplace project so you apply your skills in an actual HR team. Check the official page for the exact unit list, study periods and placement requirements.
By the end of the course you should be able to run a recruitment process from job analysis to offer, handle employee relations matters, interpret awards and enterprise agreements, contribute to performance reviews, maintain HR records and payroll data, and advise managers on people issues. You also build the soft skills that matter in HR: writing clear policy, having difficult conversations, keeping confidences, and working with people from different backgrounds. The focus is on Australian workplace law and practice, so you graduate knowing the Fair Work system and the compliance side of employing people.
This course suits three groups. First, people already working in admin, payroll or operations who want to move into an HR role. Second, school leavers or career changers who want a practical qualification without committing to a three-year degree. Third, international students looking for an Australian qualification in a field that exists in every industry. There is no need for prior HR experience. International applicants should check the English requirement on the official page; IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, and the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Confirm all details with the provider and the Department of Home Affairs.
These roles exist in almost every Australian industry: government, health, education, retail, hospitality, construction, mining, professional services and not-for-profits. HR is one of the few fields where you can work almost anywhere in the country, and the advanced diploma gives you a recognised Australian qualification to start.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
