The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or middle-management roles, or who already hold one and want the paperwork to match the job. You study how organisations actually run: how to plan and monitor work, manage budgets and financial plans, lead and develop a team, build relationships with clients and stakeholders, and handle the operational problems that come up in any workplace.
As an Australian diploma, it sits at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, one step below a bachelor degree. It is delivered as a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, usually across two semesters or trimesters. There is no research thesis at this level. Assessment is practical, case studies, workplace projects, role plays, reports and presentations, and many providers build in a work placement or workplace-based project so you practise leading real people rather than just reading about it. If you later want to go on to a bachelor degree, completed units may count as credit, though how much is up to the receiving institution.
What you actually walk away with is a set of habits. You learn to write a budget and read a variance report, run a team meeting that finishes on time, give feedback to someone whose work is slipping, manage a project from brief to handover, and deal with a complaint without escalating it. You also cover the compliance side: workplace health and safety duties, anti-discrimination and fair work obligations, and the records you need to keep. These are the things employers test in an interview.
The course suits three groups: school leavers who want a vocational path into management rather than a three-year degree, people already working in retail, hospitality, logistics, aged care or administration who want to move up, and international students looking for a shorter qualification with a clear skills outcome. International students need to meet the English requirement, IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall is the usual standard for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so check both. While studying, a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 107816D, confirm current fees, intake dates, entry requirements and English equivalences on the official page before you apply.
These roles exist in every Australian industry, which is why the diploma is one of the most widely held management qualifications in the country. Employers range from national retailers and hotel groups to state health districts, councils and family-run businesses. Many graduates use the diploma as a stepping stone into a bachelor degree in business, management or commerce, with credit for units already completed.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$13,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
