About this program

The Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a two-year qualification for people who want to work on the design side of civil infrastructure, roads, drainage, subdivisions, retaining structures and the like. You learn to turn an engineer's concept into drawings and documentation that can actually be built. That means plenty of time in CAD software, producing plans, sections and details, plus the maths and materials knowledge to know whether what you have drawn will stand up.

Australian qualifications sit on the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one is an advanced diploma, which is below a bachelor degree but above a certificate IV. It is normally delivered over four semesters, or trimesters at some providers, with each unit of study carrying a set number of credit points. You complete units in sequence, and many providers build in a final project unit where you take a real brief through to a full set of documentation. Assessment is mostly practical, drawings, reports, calculations and presentations rather than exams alone.

Work-integrated learning matters in this field. Civil construction design is taught with heavy use of industry-standard drafting software, and providers often arrange site visits or a placement with a civil contractor, engineering consultancy or local council so you see how drawings are used on site and how design changes get managed when ground conditions turn out differently from the plan. Skills you come away with include preparing detailed drawings, interpreting survey data, estimating quantities and costs, applying Australian standards to design work, and coordinating with engineers, surveyors and site supervisors.

This course suits people who like solving practical problems and are comfortable with both computers and technical detail. It is a good fit if you are already working in construction and want to move from the tools into the office, or if you are starting out and want a qualification that gets you into the industry faster than a full engineering degree. International students should note that a Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Entry requires evidence of English proficiency, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, and you should confirm current fees, intake dates and English requirements on the official course page before applying.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
