The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year vocational qualification that prepares you to work directly with people who need support, families under pressure, young people at risk, people living with disability, older Australians, and communities dealing with disadvantage. You study how to assess a client's needs, plan and deliver support, run casework, refer people to the right services, and advocate on their behalf. There is a strong emphasis on working ethically and legally: duty of care, confidentiality, mandatory reporting, and the boundaries between a support worker and a client.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of competency rather than the subjects and credit points you would see in a bachelor degree. Each unit covers a specific skill or knowledge area, and you need to complete all the required units, plus a set number of elective units, to graduate. Most providers run the diploma over four semesters, or the equivalent in trimesters, with a mix of classroom teaching, workshops and supervised work placement. Because community services is a hands-on field, placement is not optional: you complete a set number of hours in an agency such as a family support service, a homelessness service, a disability provider or a community health centre, where a qualified supervisor signs off on your practical skills. Assessment is competency-based, meaning you are judged on whether you can actually do the task to the standard the industry expects, not on a bell curve.
What you come out with is a practical set of skills. You learn to conduct client interviews, write case notes and reports that stand up to scrutiny, work within the legal and ethical framework of the sector, respond to people in crisis, work with culturally diverse clients including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and coordinate with other agencies. You also learn to look after yourself, burnout and vicarious trauma are real in this work, and the course covers reflective practice and supervision.
This diploma suits people who want to start working in community services reasonably quickly, or who are already working in the sector without a formal qualification and want to make it official. It is also a pathway into a bachelor degree in social work or community development, often with credit for the units you have already completed. Entry requirements vary between providers, and international applicants need to meet English requirements, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework, though social work and similar fields often ask for 7.0–7.5. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and provider-run English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 118725E. Check the official page and confirm the details with the provider before you apply.
Employers include state and territory government departments, local councils, not-for-profit organisations, NDIS service providers, aged care providers, and community health services. Many graduates go on to a bachelor degree in social work or a related field. International graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, and while studying, a Student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight. Confirm visa conditions with the Department of Home Affairs.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$26,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
