The Advanced Diploma of Business is a one-year qualification for people who want practical business skills without committing to a three-year bachelor degree. You study how organisations run day to day: accounting and budgeting, marketing, human resources, business law, customer service, and the planning and reporting that managers rely on. Assessment is mostly practical, case studies, group projects, presentations and work-based tasks, rather than long exams.
Australian qualifications sit on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). An advanced diploma is a shorter, vocational qualification than a bachelor degree, which normally takes three years; an honours year adds one more, a master's is one to two years, and a doctorate three or more. The Advanced Diploma of Business is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two semesters or trimesters, depending on the provider. You complete a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass all required units to graduate. Some providers build in a work placement or industry project so you can apply what you learn in a real workplace. Because it sits below a bachelor degree, you may be able to use it as a pathway, many students go on to a bachelor programme and receive credit for units already completed.
Expect to write business plans, prepare budgets, analyse market data, manage a small team project, and handle the compliance side of running a business. You will learn to use common business software, communicate with clients and colleagues, and make decisions with limited information. Group work is common, so you build the kind of teamwork and problem-solving that employers ask about in interviews. The course suits school leavers who want a fast route into an office role, people already working who want a formal qualification, and international students looking for a shorter, lower-cost option before deciding on further study.
If you hold a Student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream lets eligible graduates stay and work in Australia, check your eligibility on the Department of Home Affairs website. English requirements vary: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is common for undergraduate and coursework postgraduate courses, with 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, confirm the current amount and start dates on the official course page.
These roles appear across most Australian industries: professional services, retail, health administration, local government, mining and resources support, and not-for-profits. The qualification also gives you a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in business, accounting or management, with credit for units you have already completed.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$11,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
