The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a hands-on qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You learn how children grow and develop, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe and healthy, and how to work with families and communities. There is a strong focus on the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework, which set the rules and expectations for early childhood services across Australia. You also cover first aid, child protection, inclusion and working with children who have additional needs.
This is a diploma, so it sits above a certificate III and below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework. It runs for 1.5 years. Most Australian vocational courses are built from units of competency, and each unit carries credit points. You will complete a mix of classroom or online theory and practical assessment. The course includes a work placement component, which is standard for early childhood qualifications. Placement is where you put your learning into practice under the supervision of an experienced educator, in a registered early childhood service. You will be assessed on real tasks: setting up learning experiences, observing children, keeping records, and communicating with families.
Units cover child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, legal and ethical requirements, and working in partnership with families. You learn how to design experiences that build language, literacy, numeracy and social skills through play. You also learn how to identify and respond to children at risk, and how to create an inclusive environment for children from different backgrounds and abilities. Assessment is practical. You will write observations, plan activities, and reflect on your own practice. By the end, you should be able to step into a room and run a programme with confidence.
This diploma suits people who want to work directly with young children and lead a room or a small team. It is also a pathway to further study, such as a bachelor degree in early childhood education, if you want to become a teacher. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. Entry requires English proficiency. The published standard for this level is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs also sets a separate English requirement for the Student visa. Check the official CRICOS register and the institution's page for current fees, intake dates and placement arrangements.
Employers include long day care centres, community preschools, kindergartens, occasional care services, and government and not-for-profit organisations. The qualification is recognised across Australia.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$22,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
