About this program

The Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a two-year qualification for people who want to work on the design side of civil infrastructure, roads, drainage, subdivisions, retaining walls, water and sewer networks. You learn to produce detailed drawings and design documentation that construction teams actually build from, using the drafting and modelling software that Australian engineering consultancies run every day. Expect plenty of work on interpreting survey data, calculating levels and quantities, applying Australian Standards, and preparing plans that pass through council and certifier review.

Australian qualifications at this level are built from units of study, each carrying credit points. A full-time load usually runs across two semesters a year, with some providers using trimesters. Assessment is mostly practical: drawing submissions, design projects, site-based tasks and written reports rather than long exams. Most advanced diplomas include a capstone-style project where you take a real or simulated civil design brief from client requirements through to a set of construction drawings. Where the provider has industry links, you may also complete a work placement with a civil contractor, consultancy or local council, giving you site exposure and a referee before you finish.

Skills you build include CAD and civil design software, interpreting geotechnical and survey reports, stormwater and drainage design, road geometry, estimating, and reading and applying the standards that govern civil works in Australia. You also pick up the communication side of the job, writing specifications, coordinating with engineers, and explaining a design to a site supervisor who needs to build it.

This course suits school leavers who want a practical path into civil infrastructure without committing to a full engineering degree, career changers coming from trades or drafting, and overseas students looking for a qualification tied to a skills shortage area. It also works as a stepping stone: some graduates use it to enter a bachelor degree with credit for prior study, subject to each university's articulation rules. Entry normally requires Year 12 or equivalent, and international applicants need to meet the provider's English requirements and the Department of Home Affairs threshold for a Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check the official CRICOS listing for current tuition and intake details.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
