The Diploma of Project Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to run projects, not just work on them. You learn how projects get scoped, planned, scheduled, budgeted, staffed and closed out. Expect units on managing scope, time, cost, quality, risk, human resources and stakeholder communication. Assessment is practical: you write project plans, build schedules, track budgets, run risk registers and report on progress, usually against simulated or real workplace projects.
As a vocational qualification, this diploma is built around units of competency rather than the semester-and-credit-point structure you see in bachelor degrees. Delivery at Orange College is typically face-to-face, with each unit assessed on whether you can actually perform the task to industry standard. There is no research thesis at this level. Work-integrated learning is common in project management diplomas, so you may complete assessments based on a real project at your workplace or a simulated project run through the college.
The skills you finish with are the ones employers ask for: writing a project charter, breaking work into tasks, estimating durations and costs, managing a budget, identifying and treating risks, chairing meetings, negotiating with suppliers and reporting to a sponsor. You also learn to use project management software and the document set that goes with it. These are transferable across construction, IT, events, health, government and community organisations.
This course suits people already working in a team who keep getting handed coordination tasks, career changers moving into project support roles, and school leavers who want a practical, job-focused qualification rather than a three-year degree. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification in a field where project work is everywhere. If you later want a degree, credit may be granted for completed units, but you need to check each university's policy. Confirm entry requirements, English evidence, tuition and start dates on the official page and the CRICOS register (course code 112823G) before applying.
Australian industries that hire diploma-level project staff include construction and infrastructure, information technology, health and aged care, government and defence, mining and resources, education, and not-for-profit organisations. Many graduates start in support roles and move into project management as they build experience. If you are an international graduate, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may let you stay and work after your course, and while you study your visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight. Check current visa rules with the Department of Home Affairs.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$12,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
