The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to work in hotels, restaurants, events, clubs, resorts or food and beverage operations, and who want the supervisory and business skills that sit behind a busy venue. You study how a hospitality business actually runs: rostering and staffing, food and beverage service, front office and housekeeping, budgeting and cost control, stock and purchasing, workplace health and safety, and the legal side of serving alcohol and managing premises. Assessment is practical as much as written, so you spend time in service and kitchen settings applying what you learn rather than only reading about it.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of competency or units of study, each carrying credit points, and you normally complete them over two semesters across the year. Some providers run three trimesters instead, which can shorten the calendar time. The units build from core service and operational skills into supervisory and management units, and most diplomas finish with a capstone-style project or a supervised work placement where you take responsibility for a shift, an event or a small team. Work-integrated learning is standard in this field because employers hire on demonstrated ability, not just transcripts.
You finish able to lead a service team, write a roster that meets a wage budget, handle a customer complaint without losing the room, manage stock and suppliers, and keep a venue compliant with health, safety and liquor rules. You also pick up the commercial literacy that lets you read a profit and loss statement for a restaurant and work out where the money is going. These are the skills that move people from waiting tables to running the floor.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a fast, practical entry into the industry, people already working in hospitality who want formal recognition and a path into supervision, and career changers who like the idea of running a venue rather than sitting at a desk. It also stacks into further study: credit from a diploma usually counts towards a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business management, so it can be a first step rather than a final one. English requirements for international applicants are set out above, and the Student visa has its own separate English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs.
International students on a Student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream lets eligible graduates stay and work in Australia. Tuition and exact start dates are published on the CRICOS register and the provider's official page, confirm those details there before you apply.
These roles sit across Australian hotels and resorts, pubs and clubs, restaurants and cafes, catering companies, event venues, aged care and hospital catering, and tourism operators. Employers range from large national groups to family-run venues, and many graduates move into a supervisory role within a year or two of finishing.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$8,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
