The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that prepares you for supervisory and management roles in hotels, restaurants, resorts, clubs, and event venues. It's a practical course: you learn how to run a food and beverage outlet, manage front office operations, roster and lead staff, control stock and costs, and handle the paperwork that keeps a venue compliant with licensing, food safety, and workplace health and safety rules. You also cover marketing, budgeting, and how to deal with guests when something goes wrong.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. You'll typically study full time over four semesters, with each semester made up of several units. Assessment is competency-based: you need to show you can actually do the task, not just pass a written exam. That means role-plays, practical service sessions, case studies, and projects based on real workplace scenarios. Some providers offer trimester intakes, so you may be able to start at more than one point in the year. Check the official CRICOS listing for the exact course structure and unit list.
Hospitality is a hands-on industry, so work placement or industry experience is usually part of the course. You might spend time in a commercial kitchen, a hotel front desk, or a restaurant floor, supervised by staff who already work in the sector. This is where you practise what you've learned and build the contacts that often lead to a job after graduation. Your provider will tell you how many hours are required and whether they arrange the placement or you find it yourself.
This course suits people who want to move into a team leader or duty manager role, or who already work in hospitality and want formal recognition of their skills. It's also a good fit if you're changing careers and want a practical qualification that gets you into the industry quickly. International students should note the English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, and TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and Cambridge C1 Advanced are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While you study, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition fees are published on the CRICOS register, check there for the current amount.
These roles are found in the accommodation and food services industry, which employs hundreds of thousands of people across Australia. Employers include international hotel chains, independent restaurants, registered clubs, and event management companies. The qualification can also lead to further study, such as a bachelor degree in hospitality management, with credit for your completed units.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$28,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
