The Diploma of Information Technology is a one-and-a-half-year qualification that gets you into the practical side of IT work. You'll study units in programming, networking, database design, web development, systems analysis and IT support. Some providers also include cybersecurity basics, cloud fundamentals and project management. Assessment is mostly hands-on: building small applications, configuring networks, writing SQL queries, setting up servers, and working through troubleshooting scenarios. You'll spend time in computer labs, not just listening to lectures.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set credit point value. The Diploma of Information Technology usually runs over three or four study periods (semesters or trimesters), depending on the provider. You need to complete a set number of core and elective units to graduate. There is no thesis or major research project at this level. Instead, you might do a capstone-style unit where you work in a small team to solve a real IT problem for a local business or community organisation. Work-integrated learning is common: many providers arrange an internship or industry placement as part of the course, so you get workplace experience before you finish.
By the end, you should be able to write basic code, design and query databases, set up and secure small networks, build simple websites, and apply IT service management principles. You'll also learn to document your work, work in a team, and communicate technical ideas to non-technical people. These are the skills employers look for in entry-level IT roles.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a fast route into IT work, career changers with no prior tech background, and international students who need an Australian qualification to apply for a post-study work visa. It also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree: many universities give credit for diploma units, so you can start a degree in the second year. If you're already working in IT and want a formal qualification, it can help you move up. The course is taught in English, and international applicants need to meet English requirements (IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is common, with equivalents accepted). While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Confirm all details, including tuition and intake dates, on the official CRICOS page.
These roles are found across Australian industries: government departments, banks, insurance companies, hospitals, schools, retailers, and IT service providers. Many graduates start in help desk or support roles and move into specialist areas after a few years.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,750 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
