Bachelor of Nursing

The Bachelor of Nursing at Murdoch University prepares students to enter the nursing profession in Australia and beyond. Over 3.5 years, students learn the science of nursing through core units that cover areas such as anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, mental health nursing, medical and surgical nursing, and healthcare ethics. The structure usually includes two semesters per year, with each unit carrying a certain number of credit points towards graduation.

A key focus of the course is on clinical placements, which are integral to nursing education in Australia. Students undertake work-integrated learning in hospitals, aged care facilities, and community health organisations around Perth and regional Western Australia. These placements provide the chance to apply what is learned in the classroom to real healthcare environments, working alongside registered nurses and other professionals.

The curriculum aligns with Australian professional nursing standards and helps students develop practical skills in patient care, critical thinking, effective communication, and ethical decision-making. The final year often features a capstone placement or clinical consolidation experience, allowing students to strengthen their clinical capabilities in a supported setting. On successful completion, graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, provided they meet all registration requirements.

International applicants must demonstrate a high level of English proficiency, and all students must meet clinical and immunisation requirements before attending placements. Graduates are positioned for opportunities in Australia’s public and private health sectors, and may access post-study work rights through the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). Students on a Student visa can also work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study.
