The Diploma of Community Services at Melbourne Polytechnic is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run casework, advocate for people dealing with housing, income, family or mental health issues, and work safely within the legal and ethical rules that govern community service organisations.
Australian diplomas sit at level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They are delivered in units of study, each carrying a set number of credit points, usually across two or three study periods a year. The diploma is practical by design: you spend time in a classroom learning the theory behind case management, community development and client support, then apply it in a supervised placement in a real community services organisation. Placement is a standard part of community services training in Australia because employers expect graduates to have already worked with clients under supervision.
You finish with skills in intake and assessment, case planning, referral, group work, record keeping and working with people from different cultural backgrounds. You also learn how to look after your own wellbeing in a job that can be emotionally demanding. Assessment is mostly through practical tasks, projects and placement performance rather than exams alone.
This course suits people who are good with people, want a job where they help others, and prefer a shorter, hands-on qualification to a three-year degree. It also works for people already working in the sector who want formal recognition of their skills. If you want to go further, many graduates use the diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in social work or community services, sometimes with credit for units already completed. Entry requirements, English proficiency and intake dates should be confirmed on the official Melbourne Polytechnic page and the CRICOS register.
These roles are found across Australian not-for-profit organisations, government departments, local councils, hospitals, schools and private community service providers. The diploma is a recognised entry point into the sector, and graduates often start in direct support work before moving into coordination or team leader roles. International graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, and while studying, the Student visa allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight. Check current visa conditions on the Department of Home Affairs website.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$48,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
