Bachelor of Information Technology

This is a three-year Australian bachelor degree, so you'll complete 24 units of study, usually eight per year across two semesters or trimesters. The degree sits at Level 7 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. You'll study core IT subjects like programming, database design, networking, web development, systems analysis and project management, then choose electives or a major to match where you want to work. Most students finish with a capstone project in their final year, where you build a real system or investigate a problem for an industry client.

What you'll actually do

Expect a mix of lectures, labs and tutorials, with a lot of your time spent writing code, configuring networks and working in teams. Melbourne Polytechnic is known for hands-on teaching, so you'll spend time in computer labs using the same tools you'll meet on the job. Many units include work-integrated learning: an industry project, an internship or a placement with a Melbourne business or IT team. That's where you learn how deadlines, clients and messy real-world data actually work.

Skills you'll pick up

By the end you should be able to write and debug programs, design and query databases, build and secure networks, manage a small IT project and explain technical ideas to people who aren't technical. You'll also get practice in the soft skills employers ask about: working in a team, documenting your work and presenting to a client.

This degree suits school leavers who like problem-solving and want a practical job at the end, and also people changing careers or already working in IT support who want a formal qualification. You don't need to be a maths genius, but you do need to be comfortable with logical thinking and happy to keep learning as technology changes. English proficiency is required for international applicants; the common standard for undergraduate IT is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. • IT support or help desk technician – a common first role in almost every industry, from mining to media.
• Systems analyst or business analyst – translating what a business needs into what a technical team builds.

• Project coordinator or junior project manager – running small IT projects in consultancies and enterprise IT teams.

Graduates work across Australia in software companies, banks, telecommunications, health, education, government and the many consultancies that serve them. After finishing, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. While you study, a student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during term.
