The Bachelor of Information Technology (Cyber Security) is a three-year Australian bachelor degree, delivered by the Melbourne Institute of Higher Education. It sits at Level 7 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, the same level as any other bachelor degree in the country. You will study how computer systems are built and broken into, and how organisations defend them. Expect core IT subjects early, programming, networks, operating systems, databases, then cyber security units covering network defence, ethical hacking, digital forensics, risk and security governance, and cryptography. You finish with a capstone unit or industry project where you apply what you have learned to a real problem.
The degree is structured the way Australian bachelor degrees usually are: three years full time, split into semesters or trimesters, with eight standard units a year. Each unit carries credit points, and you need a set total to graduate, commonly 144 credit points for a three-year degree, though the exact figure is set by the institute. There is some choice of electives, so you can lean towards network security, incident response or governance depending on where you want to work. Assessment mixes exams, assignments, lab work and group projects. Many students take a lighter load and spread the degree over more than three years; that is normal in Australia.
Cyber security is a field where employers expect some practical exposure, and Australian degrees in this area typically build that in through lab-based units, simulated security incidents and a work-integrated learning or internship placement in the final year. You learn to use the tools security teams actually run, SIEM platforms, packet analysers, vulnerability scanners, and to write the reports that go with them. You also pick up the softer skills that matter in the job: explaining a risk to a manager who is not technical, documenting an incident clearly, and working inside a team under time pressure.
This course suits school leavers with an interest in computers, and also people already working in IT who want to specialise. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish, depending on your circumstances. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official course page for current unit lists, credit point totals, intake dates and fees before you apply.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
